We always hear of celebrities who tell their fans to: “be yourself, be who you want to be and you’ll go far.” At the same time, these celebrities hawk certain places, items or services that encourage their fans to join the crowd by doing the same thing and ultimately NOT be themselves. I find it weird, but hey, that’s marketing and with the popularity of social media, that’s just the way the world works these days.
I find it sad that in this day and age there are still people who prefer to follow the majority instead of being their own person. They would visit certain places, eat certain things or wear certain brands just because that’s what a lot of (popular) people do and not because that’s what they really want.
I know some people who love to casually let slip that they go to this and that place or patronize a certain shop just to point out that they are “in.” I think these people are loads different in how they point this out compared to people who genuinely like these places or shops. For the latter, they don’t have to say it unless someone asks and it is never the center of the conversation. For the former they’d not just say it, they will even post pictures with the logo of so and so and even tag the location just to point out where they are. Sometimes there’d even be a tweet or status post about it that will just show the person doesn't genuinely understand why he or she likes that place or that shop. It’s sad, really.
It’s even sadder when these same people pick on others for having different choices. We can’t all be lemmings (Never Been Kissed reference there, if you don’t get it look it up). What would the world be if we were all alike anyway?
If the world was created for everyone to be the same, I don’t think that we would all look different or be brought up in different environments and circumstances. The world would be a boring place if we were all the same. The beauty of the world is in our differences, not in our similarities. It is this variety that makes life more interesting…which is why I don’t get why there are so many who would rather be like someone they’re not instead of embracing who they are.
If you like something that everyone likes, that’s not a problem. You like it and it just so happens that a lot of other people do. It’s not a big deal. But if you like it BECAUSE that’s what everyone likes, then you've got a problem there.
A lot of people probably think that by being an individual you have to be radically different like Lady Gaga but that’s not it. To be unique, you have to be your own person. You can’t be a mindless drone following everyone else. You need to listen to what you want and not what people dictate on you, that’s what being an individual is about.
Let’s not be ashamed to be who we are. There’s nothing wrong with being different (unless it means you’re out to commit crime or break one of the Ten Commandments). There’s nothing wrong with being you. Life is too short to be living it following someone else...at least that’s what I think.
What do YOU think?
