The Latest Nicholas Sparks Movie: The Best of Me

My take on Nicholas Sparks books is that you either love them or you hate them. I’m a big fan of his work but even I have to admit that there are some books that I can’t get myself to finish or would rather not have read. Luckily, the a number of the books made to movies were the ones that I did like. The new one that has been confirmed for the big screen is another personal favorite: The Best of Me.

The story of this book revolves around high school sweethearts from two sides of the social stratosphere who are brought together again as adults by the death of someone from their past. Seeing each other again forces them to confront their past and the choices they made to the lives they have at present.

I fell in love with this book because there are so many quotable lines. Just take this one for example:

“That's why I loved being with you. We could do the simplest things, like toss starfish into the ocean and share a burger and talk and even then I knew that I was fortunate. Because you were the first guy who wasn't constantly trying to impress me. You accepted who you were, but more than that, you accepted me for me. And nothing else mattered-- not my family or your family or anyone else in the world. It was just us.”

I would love to feel that way for someone. It’s been a while since I had someone who I was in a relationship with that was like that.

I know people say that there are no real life romance is as good or as fairy tale-ish as most books make them out to be but I appreciate that this book came out with lines that say the same thing. I think these lines make the book more realistic and relatable to readers like me.

“People want to believe that every marriage is perfect balance but it isn't. One person always loves more deeply than the other.”

“...life had a way of stamping out that intensity of passion;...love wasn't enough.”

“The truth is, the world isn't easy for any of us. It never has been and it never will be.”

I can’t wait to see this turned into a movie. I’ve always pictured Hawaii Five-O star Alex O’Loughlin as the male lead while I was reading it. I know it’s a long shot, but it would be nice to have him as the lead in the movie. I didn’t have any particular female actress in mind but as long as she’d be a good fit with Alex, that would be great.

There were lines that I liked from the book about life that I agree with. I hope that some of them make it to the movie. Here are a couple of them:

“Don't take my advice. Or anyone's advice. Trust yourself. For good or for bad, happy or unhappy, it's your life, and what you do with it has always been entirely up to you.”

“Love, after all, always said more about those who felt it than it did about the ones they loved.”

My favorite line, however, would have to be the cheesiest. I would love to feel this way for someone. I haven’t felt this is in a long time. I hope that when I feel it again it will be for the right person and that he will be the one I will spend my life with.

“I want to wake up with you beside me in the mornings. I want to spend my evenings looking at you across the dinner table. I want to share every mundane detail of my day with you and hear every detail of yours. I want to laugh with you and fall asleep with you in my arms.”

Can’t wait for the movie, I really can’t!

You should post this in Book Club Friday. I like the title of his book ... and am thinking of reading Nicholas Sparks again, more like a second chance. I didn't quite like how his stories end. We'll see :)
