Goodbye Holidays 2016!

January 01, 2017

Happy New Year! Can you believe it? 2016 is over and just like that, the holidays are almost over and we are all going to be back to work. Holidays 2016 will be nothing but a memory in the next few days. I wish it could have lasted longer but as we say in Tagalog, “walang forever” (there’s no forever). All good things must come to an end.

The 2017 New Year Spread

How was your holiday like? For me, it’s been busy. I promised myself that I would use this time to try the recipes that I’ve always wanted to experiment on so I spent a lot of time in the kitchen working on the recipes that I got from Pinterest.

Honestly, there was not much of a holiday to speak of considering that we had to work the day before Christmas Eve and got back to the office two days after Christmas but I’d like to think that my family and I made the most of it while it lasted. I took a couple of days off just so I could have longer days with my niece and nephews and just to have time to get my much-needed rest after a busy last quarter at work. January will also be a very busy month for me so the rest is very much needed.

My cousins and I got together, as usual, to spend time at our grandmother’s house. We don’t get to spend as much time together as we used to when we were kids but it’s great that we all still make time for each other over the holidays even if we all have our different things to take care of now that we’re older and most of us have our own families to take care of.

To me, Holidays 2016 also means time to get things done. As you obviously noticed, I worked on getting my blog back on track in time for the new year. It's a work in progress, but I'm working on it!

I also got some work done for the house --- I bought and installed an air conditioner in preparation for the coming summer so that the kids will have a place to hang out and (literally) chill when it gets too warm.

The holidays is also the time when I reflect on the past year and time to plan for the coming year ahead – not just in terms of work but in terms of life and my personal goals as well. It’s my time to take stock of what is important and my opportunity to plan so that I can make sure that I am going toward the direction that I want my life to go to. After all, 2017 is the year that I turn 40 and it’s as good a time as any to make sure that I am on track with my life and doing what’s best.

I remember reading that it is good to have a mantra or a theme for your year that best describes the direction you want to lead. For me, the words that seem to have been stuck to my brain since the holidays has been “Make it or Break it.” I’ve had the same plans for years but I haven’t done anything to make them happen. I think that now that I’m turning 40 I need to do something, I need to act to make things happen for me. If I don’t do anything now, I’m afraid I won’t have the will power to do anything about it in the years to come. This should be the year that I make things happen for me, finally.

Today has been a good start to 2017. Time with the family, good food, good wine and my favorite kind of weather (chilly, a bit gloomy to some but heavenly to me) … it has been the perfect combination that made it a great day for me. I hope that it’s a sign of the days and months to come. I hope that 2017 will be good, productive and full of blessings not just for myself but for everyone out there.

How has your holiday season been like? Has Holidays 2016 been good for you? Do you have a mantra for the year like mine? Please leave me a comment and let me know!
