Ian Somerhalder and his Quest to Save the Planet

January 16, 2017

What words come to mind when you hear the name Ian Somerhalder?

When we think of Ian Somerhalder we usually think of him as an actor, a model, a director, or as the husband of Nikki Reed – or the ex of Nina Dobrev. Some people may only associate him with the roles he’s played on TV, the most popular being Boone from Lost and Damon Salvatore, the bad boy vampire from The Vampire Diaries.

People may think that Ian’s TV image based on his roles would make him a tough guy and in a way, he is. For his fans and the people who are more familiar with his work, what he is mostly a tough guy about is his against actions that affect the environment due to him being an environmentalist. This is because he is a man who is passionate about saving the planet through his organization, the Ian Somerhalder Foundation. If there is someone out there that you can call Captain Planet because of the action he’s been doing for the environment, it would have to be him.

ISF website -- if you want to know what Ian's been up to with his environmental projects, this is where you should go.

I first took notice of the Ian Somerhalder Foundation when Ian himself started posting about it on social media. Since then I’ve been following organizations that his foundation has worked with regarding the environment. In the years that I have been following Ian on social media I have been learning things about what is being done for the environment and what technologies are available to be able to contribute to the conservation of the resources of the planet.

Established in 2010 after Ian was moved by the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Ian Somerhalder Foundation is working to empower people and calling them to action to do their part in saving the planet and the creatures that live in it.

According to the ISF website, “The Ian Somerhalder Foundation works to empower, educate and collaborate with people and projects to positively impact the planet and its creatures. It delivers unique programs and services and provides public outreach, education, and grants in support of Creatures, Environment, Youth, and Grassroots initiatives.”  The ISF believes that the world is interconnected and co-dependent, this means all living things from the plants to our resources, to animals and humans are dependent on one another. This means that any solution to its problems must be enacted in an interconnected way because the solution for one affects the other.

Apart from his work in the foundation, Ian’s environmental exploits includes work in the documentary series Years of Living Dangerously, where he featured the Evangelical Fight Against Global Warming during the first season and the effect of the warming of oceans in relation to hurricanes and super storms during the second season. This is a guy who does not just say that he is supporting a certain cause, he is taking action and putting his money where his mouth is when it comes to the environment. I admire that about him and his wife Nikki Reed, who supports the same causes as well.

If you need more proof of how passionate of an environmentalist Ian is, the United Nations Environment Program has recognized his efforts and has named him a Goodwill Ambassador, just one of twelve in their list of ambassadors from all over the world. Isn’t that impressive?

I admire that Ian is using his fame and his influence to do something positive for the world. I love that he is doing something in his spare time to contribute and is inspiring others to do the same. He’s not out partying, he’s out there making a difference. Not many celebrities are doing that and really getting his hands dirty to do his part. I think that next to Leonardo di Caprio, Ian is the guy who is most outspoken and active about saving the environment in the entertainment industry. He’s pretty consistent about it too. You can tell that this isn’t just a phase or a hobby for him. This is something that means something to him. This guy is not just a pretty face, he is someone with a good heart as well.

I hope that more people in the entertainment industry can be more like Ian and use their influence to positively affect the world. The world could end up a better place if all celebrities use their fame to make more people take action to save the planet.
