Crisis on Infinite Earths Review (Episodes 1 to 3)

For the first few seasons, I had been a fan of the CW shows that feature DC characters/superheroes: Arrow, The Flash, The Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl. At some point I felt a bit of a burnout with all the TV shows that I had been streaming so I slowly quit watching shows one by one until I quit cold turkey altogether. Still, I made it a point to watch the crossover episodes and this season, it’s all about the Crisis on Infinite Earths. They’re three of five episodes in and so far, I have to say it’s the best crossover ever!

From the very start of the crossover in Supergirl, I was already having so much feels from the quick clips that featured all the heroes in some of their iconic moments on TV so far plus some cameos from actors from other former and current DC shows, as if having all these TV show heroes all together was not enough!

I loved that the crossover was full of action from the beginning, with the heroes already fighting to save as much people as they can from Supergirl’s earth before it is destroyed. I was shocked that at the end of it all, the Green Arrow died. They killed off one of a hero! A major one at that!

In the second installment, which was in Batwoman, was even better. I may be biased because I’ve been a Superman fan since I was a little girl, but this installment made my heart skip a beat seeing Tom Welling as Clark Kent again, complete with Erica Durance as Lois! I agree with everyone who said that this felt like a sort of epilogue to the whole Smallville story, showing what happened to the characters since fans last saw them. It was a good way to have a quick hello and goodbye to one of the popular shows of its time.

The highlight for me would have to be seeing Brandon Routh as Clark Kent/Superman again. I had goosebumps seeing him as an older version of his character from the movie Superman Returns. He was perfect as Clark (a version of him closer to that of Christopher Reeve than Henry Cavill) and even more so as Superman. It made me wish that (as much as I enjoy watching Tyler Hoechlin as the Arrowverse Man of Steel) it was Brandon’s Superman that was getting a series on the CW. A movie would not be so bad either.

There were other plots in this episode, like the Lazarus Pit thing to revive Oliver Queen and the evil Batman that Supergirl and Batwoman met but really, those pale in comparison to that Smallville scene and having Brandon Routh’s Superman back.

The third episode of Crisis was in The Flash. Oliver is alive (because of the Lazarus Pit) and needed his soul back. Who else would Constantine turn to but Lucifer himself! There were rumors that Tom Ellis shot scenes for the show but when he denied it, I wasn’t putting too much hope in seeing him in Crisis. When he was mentioned, I practically screamed while watching the show, especially when Lucifer Morningstar himself appeared on screen! It made me wish that maybe there can be ways to keep the character alive in the Arrowverse when the show ends on Netflix.

Another great crossover appearance was from Black Lightning, who helped Barry and Cisco to stop the Anti-Monitor’s energy cannon. I’m getting so confused with the timelines of everything at this point, since I had stopped watching these shows a while back.

The Crisis episodes took a break over the holidays, the show ending with Oliver becoming the Spectre and the heroes being whisked off to the Vanishing Point just as the last Earth was destroyed. Too bad the plot twist with this was having Lex Luthor replace Routh’s Superman as one of the Paragons at the last minute – I would have wanted more of him on screen!

There are two episodes to go from Arrow and The Legends of Tomorrow. I can’t wait to find out where the writers are taking this story and how it would affect the other shows after this.

Did anyone else catch these shows? Anyone else looking forward to the last two installments? Leave me a comment and let me know!
