The Sunday Update 14: Options

If I could describe the past week in one word it would be about options. I think that is the recurring theme of the week.

At the office we discussed the option of my division moving to another space in our building to ensure and improve proper social distancing between employees. It would cost money to make it happen, something which we may not have just yet given the additional expenses that we’ve had because of the pandemic. Having to weigh on the factors that will be affected by the move or non-move is not easy. As important as it is to make it happen, we do not have the funds to make it happen right now.  It is all still up in the air, hopefully, we can come up with a plan that everyone can agree on soon.

Career-wise, I was also faced with options to choose from for my future. At one end was an offer for a better, higher-paying job that — however — did not have the job security that I currently have. Another was the option for another job that would not necessarily pay better but would help ensure better benefits and less stress. And then of course there is the option of staying where I am...where I have been for almost 20 years. Every option has its own share of pros and cons. I don’t know for sure what I would want to do. I still have time to decide (maybe a year or two), but now that the options have been given, I know it would be in my mind until the moment comes that I have to make that decision. With people getting salary cuts and losing jobs during this pandemic, I’m not sure that I’m brave enough to take a risk with the opportunities presented to me. I guess I’ll have to wait and see how things turn out in the next year or so.

This week I’ve also had a couple of people offer me opportunities to explore something that is beyond what I do for a living. It involves something I enjoy doing but I consider a hobby. While I have been dipping my toes into possibly monetizing it this is the first time that I’ve considered the possibility of it becoming something I can do not just as a way to decompress from work but to add to my personal income as well. I feel like it would be a good chance for me to see if I can make a living doing what I love. Then again, if I fail at it, I fear that I may be spoiling something that I love to do and might turn me off from doing it again.

December is just a week away and my sister and I were discussing our options (?!) when it came to celebrating the holiday. Naturally, it would not be the way it used to be, but we still haven’t made any decisions on what exactly we are going to do. We’ve been throwing ideas one after another but have not been able to come up with something solid just yet.  We’re thinking of ordering our food from restaurants, but we’re also playing with the idea of ordering what we need online and cooking ourselves. We haven’t gone out to the supermarket since the pandemic started and we really want to make sure that we take precautions, especially during the holiday season when I’m sure these places would be crowded and online shops and deliveries would be in high demand. I think we need to make a decision before it’s too late to order from restaurants or online shops for the things that we might need.

How about you? How has your week been? Are you making plans for the holidays already?
