NCIS: An Old Favorite on Disney Plus

As I have mentioned in a couple of earlier posts on this blog, I am a fan of NCIS. I have watched it since it started but I have missed out on some seasons because they were no longer available on our cable TV service.  It was a good thing that I had signed up for Disney+ because the seasons I missed were all there.

I wanted to do a throwback and review all the earlier seasons when I found out that the show was on Disney+. Sadly, the streaming service only had the latest seasons so I could only go and see the seasons that I had previously missed.

One of the seasons I missed was the one in which the lead character, Gibbs, leaves NCIS. He is replaced by a former FBI agent named Parker, who becomes the new leader of the team that Gibbs has left behind.

Being a longtime fan of the show, I have seen members of the cast come and go so many times and I think they have had a good record of making sure that whoever is left behind still makes it a good team to watch. Some say that it was because Mark Harmon, who played Gibbs, was still in the show. Considering how there have been two Gibbs-less seasons so far with the show being renewed for another season, I think they are doing a great job making sure the team dynamic still worked for its audience.

With the new Gibbs-less show, I find that characters are being given more time to shine like Kasie (who replaced Abby as forensics tech) and Jimmy, who now has a love interest in Agent Knight, played by Katrina Law. I was very happy to find out that Katrina became a regular on the show. I became a fan of hers when I first saw her on the series Arrow, where she played Nyssa Al Gul. She then moved to Hawaii Five-O, and I loved her there too. I would love to see her do more on NCIS because she is an actor who stands out in action roles. So far, the focus on her character has been on the romance with Jimmy. Having Knight paired with Jimmy was a bit of a surprise for me. I was half-expecting her to have a relationship with Torres, so this was a curveball for me.

As much as I love seeing that these characters have love lives, I would still love to see more action. Given how much action Katrina Law has done in other shows I guess it’s only fair for me to be expecting more from her in this one. I hope they can give her something more exciting to do later in the series.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that Parker as the leader of the time worked for this show. I wasn’t sure if having another leader other than Gibbs would work. I was a fan of Mark Harmon’s character from the very beginning, and he was the reason I stuck with the show even if the other characters changed throughout the seasons. I’m just glad that they didn’t try to make him into another Gibbs but that he endeared himself to the viewers in another way. I am loving the whole pastry-loving aspect of him. It’s an interesting quirk. I miss having characters in serious roles with quirks. I love it when writers give them that.

So far though, in this Gibb-less environment, most of the crimes that the team has had to solve have been simple and have not been as high stakes as some of the cases that earlier seasons have shown. I hope that the next season (or seasons) will give viewers something more intense to watch. Maybe then we’ll see just how good of a dynamic this new team has together without the famous Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
